Barbecue Festival Goers Can Ride the Train to Lexington
June 9, 2009

Lexington, NC -- Want to save gas, yet still attend the Barbecue Festival in Lexington? It's easy. Take the train.

Each year, the Carolinian and the Piedmont, North Carolina's Amtrak trains that run between Charlotte and Raleigh, stop in Lexington for the Festival. It's the only time of the year they include a scheduled stop in the pork city.

The 26th Annual Barbecue Festival will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend and feast on the slow-cooked pork shoulders that have made Lexington so famous.

Main Street in Historic Uptown Lexington will be transformed into a big celebration with a juried art and craft show, roving performers, entertainment, a large children's play area and lots of food - including finely-chopped barbecue sandwiches, hushpuppies and sweet iced tea.

Sound tempting? "The advantage of taking the train is that you save gas, don't have to worry about parking or traffic, and you can sleep on the way home," said Joan Bagherpour, spokesperson for the North Carolina Rail Division. "Since gasoline prices have increased, so has train usage. Not only is train travel fun, but inexpensive too," she explained. "You can lounge in comfortable seats, get up and walk around, and see the countryside. You don't need to stop for a bathroom break. We have them on board. And that's a big advantage for traveling families." Stephanie K. Saintsing, executive director of the Barbecue Festival, added, "You can stock up on barbecue sandwiches and take them with you on board for supper. One for the rail, so to speak."

Trains will be stopping in the following cities to pick up passengers: Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Lexington, Salisbury, Kannapolis and Charlotte. Call 1-800-USA-RAIL (872-7245) and be sure to use the LEX special city code when inquiring about ticket prices. Or, you can log onto www.bytrain.org/passenger for more information.

All-aboard the Barbecue Express!
